THE CARDIOLOGY DEPARTMENT
The Department of cardiology serves as a centre for the provision of preventive and curative services. The plan of activities is as given below:
Immediate plans of the department:
- To promote awareness of heart diseases and sensitise the public on causes and means of prevention.
- To provide accurate and non invasive diagnosis of the majority of cardiac diseases, using Echocardiography, TEE, ECG, Stress ECG and Haltor monitoring.
- To provide adequate medical treatment to all patients in need including necessary and essential drugs and other forms of therapy like Cardiac pacing and Programming.
- To provide corrective and palliative cardiac surgery e.g B-T shunting, PDA ligation, Pericardiotomy, Pericardiectomy and valve commisurotomy.
Intermediate plans:
- Expand to limited invasive cardiology through Cardiac catheterization and angiography for simple procedures.
- Expand Surgical services to include banding, venous shunts and simple open heart operations including closure of septal defects with on job training by visiting Cardiac surgical teams.
Long term plan:
- Complete diagnostic unit with Non invasive, Invasive and Electrophysiology departments.
- Self sustaining cardiac surgical unit able to carry out Open heart surgery.
- Active research and training.
Ongoing Activities:
Currently the Cardiology Department offers diagnostic, curative and surgical services.
Available diagnostic services include:-
- ECG
- Echocardiography
- TEE (Trans-eosophageal Echo)
- Stress ECG
- Haltor monitoring.
- Pacemaker programming
- Pacemaker Lead analysis
Surgical services to date include closed heart operations like:-
- PDA ligation,
- Mitral valve commissurotomy
- Coarctation of the aorta repair
- Pericardiectomy.
- Pericardiocentesis
- Pericardiotomy
- Pacemaker implantation (transvenous and Epicardial)
- BT shunts etc.
