The Makerere University Medical School was started in 1924. Its avearge highest intake is 160 students who train in different courses such as Medicine, Surgery, Pharmacy,Dentistry, Medical Radiology and Nursing. Through the Electives programme, we offer International students an opportunity to come and learn alongside with Medical students and enjoy the academic and social environment that Makerere University offers.

We also have opportunities to work in smaller District Hospitals and clinics that allows you to spend one or two weeks of your elective in a rural community working at the local clinic and seeing first hand how traditional cultures and lack of resources impact on primary healthcare delivery.

We provide a wide range of acute clinical services including an Accident and Emergency service, General Medicine and Surgery, Paediatrics, Psychiatry and Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Elective students are accepted for a total period of between 4-12 weeks. There is a range of attachments on offer.

Residents/medical students spend the morning on rounds with the team performing history and physical examinations. In addition, residents and medical students come up with differential diagnoses and form management plans (i.e. labs, imaging, and treatment). The afternoon is spent taking further care of the patients based on the plans made during morning rounds. There are also new patients who are admitted to each medical service. In addition, there are conferences, morning lectures, and journal club sessions for additional learning. Teaching peers is also a component to the program.
