The department was established in 1972 under the administration of expetriates.However,over time it started to attract local personnel who were sent abroad for proffessional training by subjecting them to postgraduate studies.Never the less,in 1978,things happened not to be faring well in the country which resulted to the suspension of post graduate training until 1988 when it was resumed vigorously. There are two categories of employees in the department i.e those from the ministry of heallth and those from Makerere University.

OBJECTIVES

• Provision of medical and surgical curative eye services
• To render health education and preventive services in eye diseases.
• To ensure that there are qualified opthalmologists in the country by teaching undergraduates and post garduate students.
• To carry out research in related eye diseases
  

• Examination and treatment of eye patients.
• Teaching both Undergraduates and postgraduate medical students as well as Clinical officers.
• To carry out research connected to eye diseases.
• To carry preventive eye disease services.
