The UROLOGY UNIT

The Urology Unit of Mulago Hospital handles issues concerned with the urinary, genital tract and reproductive system of males.

Abnormal conditions of the urinary tract and kidneys are among the most common paediatric and adult health concerns in East Africa, affecting several children and adults each year. Urology Services at ward 3A New Mulago, provides complete diagnostic and treatment options for paediatrics, Adults and female patients with conditions that affect the urinary tract or kidneys or both. These conditions include:

  • Ambiguous genitalia
  • Hematuria
  • Hypospadias
  • Megaureter
  • Neurogenic bladder
  • Undescended testes
  • Ureteropelvic junction obstruction
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Vesicoureteral reflux
DIAGNOSIS

Symptoms of serious conditions of the urinary tract or kidneys vary but are commonly indicated by frequent, uncontrolled or painful urination. Pediatric Urology Services offer state-of-the-art diagnostic techniques for accurately identifying urologic diseases and disorders in infants, children and adolescents. Physicians in the Urology Unit are currently investigating ways to diagnose problems in the fetus so that potentially life-threatening conditions can be corrected before they fully develop. Diagnostic procedures that are available include:

  • Biopsy
  • Blood tests
  • Computerized axial tomography (CAT) scan
  • Endoscopy
  • Intravenous pyelogram
  • Nuclear renal scan
  • Ultrasound
  • Urodynamics
  • Voiding cystourethrogram
  • X-ray
